Dr Christopher Khng spent a year in the USA under the Health Manpower Development Program (HMDP), sponsored by the Singapore Health Ministry to pursue advanced surgical training in the field of Complex Cataract & Anterior Segment Reconstruction surgery. He did a clinical fellowship under the tutelage of Dr I. Howard Fine, Clinical Professor at Casey Eye Institute, Oregon Health and Science University, who is an acknowledged world expert in advanced cataract surgery and cataract surgical technology. While with Dr Fine at Oregon Eye Institute in Eugene, Oregon, Dr Khng also spent time with Drs Mark Packer and Richard Hoffman, both world renowned surgeons. He gained extensive experience in advanced lens surgery, complex lens implant calculations, bimanual microincision phacoemulsification cataract surgery, accommodative and multifocal lens implants, and was involved in research on astigmatism correction and eye pressure changes during cataract surgery.

This research led to publications in the US peer reviewed eye journals and also to the development of a surgical instrument to improve the accuracy of incisional astigmatism correction, developed in conjunction with the American surgical company ASICO.

While in Oregon, Dr Khng gained experience with Refractive surgery, LASIK and Phakic lens implantation, including the Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL, often referred to incorrectly as the Implantable Contact Lens).

Much time was spent with Dr Robert Cionni, the inventor of the Cionni modified capsular tension ring used to secure very loose cataract lenses. This training also provided Dr Khng with the unique opportunity to gain experience with iris repair techniques and special intricate suturing methods allowing the repair to take place through tiny incisions. Dr Khng also received plenty of hands-on experience dealing with cases requiring prosthetic iris implants. Many of these cases referred to CEI were also considered “too difficult” to do by other surgeons elsewhere, and the experience gained in handling these cases has been invaluable. Again, Dr Khng was actively involved in clinical research, and the result of this research produced more than a dozen publications in the peer reviewed US journals and textbooks.

Because of this exposure to a wide variety of difficult cases, Dr Khng has a depth and breadth of experience in complex cataract surgery unparalleled in Singapore.
