To a horticulturist this particular breed
of purple flower is the Blood Iris ( Iris
sanguinea) or ayame. It takes its name from
the Greek word for a rainbow, referring to
the wide variety of flower colors found
among the many species. As well as being
the scientific name, iris
is also very widely used as a common

SINGAPORE: The first
Singapore eye doctor to participate in an
ORBIS flying hospital mission has returned
from Syria where he helped 10
visually-impaired Syrians regain their
sight.
ORBIS is a non-profit organization fighting
blindness in developing countries. Dr Chris
Khng was one of 10 doctors from around the
world who volunteered for the Syria mission
late last month. Within five days, Dr Khng
helped many to regain their sight, including
a 12-year-old boy who became blind in one
eye almost two years ago.
According to ORBIS, most cases of blindness
in Syria can be easily treated if the
doctors are trained in advanced eye surgery
techniques. It was ORBIS' second mission to
Syria since last year but for Dr Khng, it
was his first eye operation on board ORBIS.
"Because of the gust of wind at the airport,
the plane would suddenly jerk a little bit
during the surgery and we would have to
pause the surgery," said Dr Khng. |
