If you wish to give some needy people the gift of sight, here's how you can help.

From Jan - Jun 2010, Ngee Ann Polytechnic's (NP) School of Health Sciences is collaborating with Eyewise Vision Clinic to bring recycled glasses to Cambodia. A worthy project to bring visual clarity and comfort to the less fortunate in Cambodia, this recycling effort is one that everyone can support to make a positive difference in other people's lives.

Eyewise Vision Clinic's Medical Director, Dr Christopher Khng is no stranger to volunteering and helping. He is Singapore's volunteer medical faculty on ORBIS ( the international flying eye hospital). He has volunteered his medical experience in places like Alleppo Syria and he has done eye screening at community centres and for the Rotary Club. For the Cambodia project, he will work with Ngee Ann's student volunteers from the Diploma in Optometry course.

Before the trip, he will give them an educational talk on topics like common eye trauma and paediatric ophthalmology. The students will also clean, sort the glasses according to their prescription strengths, and package them properly. Most of the recycled spectacles will be distributed to people who will be screened and assessed in Cambodia to give them a chance to read and enjoy a better quality of life. The rest of the spectacles collected will be kept for similar future projects.

A recycling point will be set up at Eyewise Vision Clinic and the polytechnic from now till end June to collect used or unwanted spectacles from patients, students, lecturers and other well wishers.
